Jumper Journey Pt. 2

In case you missed Part 1, I refer you to http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/sewingclasses/board.pl?t=23819 where I explored the possibility of jumper style as it applies to women over 40. The topic ran for 12 pages and spawned much discussion on other blogs about what's appropriate for women and what's best left to teens and little girls. OK, point taken: I didn't make one for myself - yet.

Fast foward a year. Daughter wants jumper. Daughter is 17. She will have one. She picked this one: Vintage Simplicity 6319

which I found at Lanetz Living vintage patterns. It's a juniors 13 which should work very nicely, just need to add a little extra at the waist and hips. Daughter's fabric choice is a mini-houndstooth check in beige, white and light blue on a black background. Very chic and not the usual choice for teens. Thank Goodness.

This pattern utilizes shaped darts or "French darts" emitting from the waistline. I've never sewn these but have read about them. Fear not, says Simplicity, for this is a "How-to-Sew" pattern which includes a tissue lesson on making perfect shaped darts. Behold: Knowledge on Tissue.

I have photographed each separate step and will post later as the work progresses. To speed things along (read: Slow Sewer) I am omitting a world of facings and will instead line the jumper in some shiny silky polyester fabric found on a clearance table. There's a lot to share about this project, but let me leave you with my favorite image so far:

Two pieces plus pocket. I love it.
